Reporting Relationship: Reports to Police Chief
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt.
Position Details
The Police Department Secretary performs a variety of administrative and office support functions for the police department. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:
- Responsible for the systematic management of police records through indexing, data entry, coding, processing, dissemination, organization, storage, retrieval; ultimate disposal according to the records retention schedule, fulfilling mandatory State and Federal reporting requirements and issuance of firearm permits to residents.
- Responsible for the transcription of dictated police reports and taped interview (Q&A) statements as well as typing from handwritten copy and other clerical tasks to support the law enforcement operations of the Department.
- Provides excellent customer service both on the phone and in-person concerning police records.
- Completes various administrative tasks and projects as assigned.
While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
Position Requirement
Education: High School Diploma, or equivalent (G.E.D.).
Work Experience: Secretary and customer service experience preferred. In addition, strong verbal and written communication skills are preferred.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); excellent data entry and typing skills (60 wpm); experience with video monitor and mainframe computer applications preferred.
Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to lift/pull/push/move/carry up to 25 lbs., and the ability to bend/stand/reach/lean. Report preparation and writing at times requires extended use of a keyboard.

Working Conditions:
Most work is performed in a normal office environment. Occasional driving or riding may be required.
