Reporting Relationship: Reports to Electrical Superintendent

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Details

This is skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of high and low voltage electrical distribution wires and cables.  Work involves performance of skilled test in accordance with standard trade practices in construction, maintenance and repair of distribution systems, substations and generation equipment.  Work is normally performed under supervision and is subject to inspection although under certain situations (example:  emergencies and supervisor absence) they may be qualified to make their own decisions.

  • Assists in planning future growth of system, maintaining existing system, recommending updating methods, and correcting concerns including: Broken or rotting poles, trimming trees, checking voltage and amperage, as well as keeping lines clear for safety.
  • Maintains City Electrical Equipment including trucks, tools and others, keep safety records, and keep equipment up to safety regulations including OSHA compliance.
  • Maintain civil defense sirens and associated equipment as well as test equipment monthly.
  • Maintains street lights and recreational lighting.
  • Maintain electrical meters. Have meters tested, have meters in stock for replacement or new service. Check to verify meters are properly installed as well as repair and replace damaged meters as needed.
  • Help resolve customer concerns relating to the electrical utility.
  • May be called back for emergencies and routine work.

While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Position Requirements

Education: One year of apprentice training or job-related experience.

Work Experience: seminars and schools to add to knowledge of electrical distribution.

Physical and Mental Requirements:  Occasionally exertion of force in excess of 50 and/or up to 100 pounds to move objects or equipment accessories is required.  Must be able to exert 20-50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Must be able to climb ladders in excess of 120 feet and descend into and work inside confined spaces.

Working Conditions:  Most work is performed in a field environment involving working inside and outside of vehicles and in confined spaces.  Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold.  Conditions can include working in wet, muddy, slippery or dusty and windy conditions.  At these times there may be intermittent exposure to very disagreeable working conditions.
