 Position Details

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the city’s wastewater treatment plant, equipment, and associated processes, and facility activities established by the City. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  • Uses a rodder and jetter to clean sanitary sewer lines periodically.
  • Supervises full and part-time plant operators.
  • Bags grit and rag screenings and pump sludge daily.
  • Monitors and repairs plant equipment including changes fuses, checking amps, cleaning, and servicing wastewater tanks and performing annual inspections.
  • Records daily flow and perform daily and weekly testing of effluent and influent samples as required by the MPCA, adjusts process controls as needed. Completes all necessary reporting to the State or other agencies.
  • Performs air tests on sewer lines; cleans sanitary sewer and blows fresh air in manholes when required.
  • Takes soil samples and applies biosolids to designated fields as appropriate.
  • Operates and maintains all department equipment and manages all equipment capital planning.
  • Records, updates, and logs data pertaining to plant operations, maintenance, and administrative functions including equipment operation, inventories and laboratory results.
  • Orders, receives, and inventories chemicals needed.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from the public.
  • Maintains safe and clean working conditions in and around the waste water treatment plan and all work areas.
  • Provides timely written documentation to the Utility Commission and City Manager concerning WWTP activities and recommendations.
  • Actively participates in educational programs to maintain required Department of Health licensing and treatment plant certification, and makes positive progress toward improving individual certification, job skills, and professional training.  
  • Maintains an excellent driving record and a valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
  • Is actively involved with future plant improvement planning.
  • Attends Utility Commission meetings on a monthly bases and may attend City Council meetings on occasion.
  • Will be responsible for responding to emergencies in a timely manner. May be required to come in during non-regular scheduled hours for emergency situations.

While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Position Requirements

 Education: Associate degree in Water and Wastewater Technology

Requirements: Must possess a Minnesota Class B CDL drivers’ license, Class B Wastewater license. Vocational or technical training in water systems and treatment can substitute for the required experience.

Work Experience: two years of work experience.

Physical and Mental Requirements:  Occasionally exertion of force in excess of 50 and/or up to 100 pounds to move objects or equipment accessories is required. Must be able to exert 20-50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Must be able to climb ladders in excess of 120 feet and descend into and work inside confined spaces.

Working Conditions:  Most work is performed in a field environment involving working inside and outside of vehicles and in confined spaces. Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold. Conditions can include working in wet, muddy, slippery or dusty and windy conditions. At these times there may be intermittent exposure to very disagreeable working conditions. Some assignments involve exposure to odors and toxic gases, such as from solid waste or untreated sewage. Some job duties will require the use of chemicals. There is often exposure to traffic and moving equipment. There is considerable attention to detail when handling equipment in tight quarters or around people.

This person manages the overall safety, direction, and operations of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Work further includes: plant repairs, recording flows, completing all necessary reporting and testing, maintaining equipment, responsible for inventory, and more. Must have or be able to obtain a Class B MN driver’s license. A Class B wastewater license is desired. Salary range is: $24.16. - $30.59Hr. depending on qualifications.
